The West Bengal Assembly session is set to begin on June 9, during which a resolution on 'Operation Sindoor' will be tabled. Speaker Biman Banerjee said on Monday that the resolution would be brought to formally acknowledge the Indian Army’s cross-border operation carried out in response to a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in April. The session is expected to continue for approximately two weeks.
Speaker Biman Banerjee stated that the ruling Trinamool Congress would bring the proposal to the House. “The proposal is being brought to honour the Army for their role in 'Operation Sindoor'. If the party doesn’t take the initiative, I will use my privilege as Speaker to present it myself,” he said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier demanded a discussion on the same issue in Parliament.
‘Operation Sindoor’ was launched on the night of May 7 by the Indian Army, following the killing of 26 unarmed civilians in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. The attack was carried out by four terrorists affiliated with a Lashkar-supported group. A local Kashmiri youth reportedly guided the attackers during the massacre.
In retaliation, the Indian Army destroyed nine terror camps across the Line of Control in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. According to sources, over 100 terrorists and approximately 35 to 40 Pakistani soldiers were killed during the operation. Subsequent retaliatory attempts by Pakistan were reportedly thwarted by Indian forces, who also targeted Pakistani air bases in response. A ceasefire was later requested by Pakistan and accepted by India.
Speaker Banerjee also mentioned that if the opposition chooses to bring a resolution on the Murshidabad violence, the House will consider it for discussion. “They often bring proposals on minor issues, seek discussion, and then walk out during the Chief Minister’s speech,” he added.
